This exquisite one and a quarter ounce silver Sovereign coin is recognized as official legal tender of Saint Helena, a pristine British Island territory located in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, Saint Helena was later fortified by The East India Company following a charter granted by Oliver Cromwell to govern the island. It became a crucial refueling stop for ships of The East India Company and foreign merchants en route to the East, serving as a vital lifeline for ships on their lengthy voyage home. Today, Saint Helena is best known as the location where Napoleon was held captive after the Battle of Waterloo until his death in 1821.
