The early 1980s marked the peak of demand for these coins, with the highest mintage figures for the 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand occurring between 1980 and 1982. The first release saw sales of 856,001 coins, and the peak mintage reached 1.108 million coins in 1981. On the obverse of the South African Gold Krugerrand Coins is a depiction of Paul Kruger, created by Otto Schultz in 1892. This left-profile relief of the former four-term president of the South African Republic originally graced the gold coins of the South African Pound in the 19th century.
The reverse side of the 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins features Coert Steynberg's depiction of a Springbok antelope, a national symbol of the modern Republic of South Africa. This design captures the Springbok in a pronking action, a dynamic movement involving several leaps that can propel the animal as high as 4 feet off the ground with all four legs simultaneously airborne.
