The American Gold Buffalo was introduced as part of the United States Mint's strategy to compete with other international 24-karat gold bullion coins. Unlike the American Gold Eagle, which is made of 22-karat gold, the Gold Buffalo offers investors and collectors an option in pure 24-karat gold.

The design, created by James Earle Fraser, a native of Winona, Minnesota, who grew up on the American frontier, harks back to his 1913 Indian Head Nickel. Fraser's designs for the coin were inspired by his vision of the American West and feature significant American iconography.

On the obverse of the coin, there is a left-profile portrait of a Native American chieftain, which Fraser modeled by synthesizing the features of three real-life tribal leaders. The obverse also features the word "Liberty" and the year of minting.

The reverse portrays Black Diamond, a bison who resided at New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. This side of the coin includes the inscriptions "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust," along with details of the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, and its face value.
