The Austrian Mint released the initial 1 oz and 1/4 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins simultaneously in 1989. The series expanded rapidly over the following years, introducing a 1/10 oz coin in 1991 and a 1/2 oz coin in 1994. In 2014, to celebrate the 25th anniversary, a 1/25 oz coin was added to the series, and due to its popularity, it has continued to be issued annually.

The obverse of these coins features the iconic pipe organ located in the Musikverein's Golden Concert Hall, which was installed in 1907 as a replacement for the original 1872 organ.

The reverse of the 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coins depicts an array of orchestral instruments, including a centrally positioned cello flanked by violins, with a bassoon, French horn, and harp in the background.
