Introduced in 1979, the Canadian Maple Leaf Series historically featured Queen Elizabeth II until her passing in September 2022. The 2023 release was the final edition to showcase Elizabeth II, making way for King Charles III's debut on the obverse in the 2024 release.

The obverse of each 2024 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf features a newly minted bust of King Charles III. In accordance with Canadian coining tradition, the orientation of monarch portraits is reversed with the accession of a new monarch. Thus, Charles III is depicted in left-profile relief, contrasting with the various right-profile effigies of Queen Elizabeth II during her 70-year reign.

The reverse side of the 2024 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins displays Walter Ott's classic depiction of the sugar maple leaf, Canada’s national emblem, rendered in exquisite naturalistic detail.
